Late Treat Bonanza - Rules and FAQ

Hi! Welcome to the Late Treat Bonanza. Late Treat Bonanza is an event that runs twice a year with the aim of encouraging people to finish up late fanwork gifts that they intend to give to other people. While late treats are always allowed, the intention of this event is to give people structure, deadline, occasion, and/or company to make someone a present, regardless of how long ago the gift was started or intended to be made. This event is inspired by [community profile] happybelatedtreatmas, although with some notable differences, particularly in the way sign-ups work.

Overview

Late Treat Bonanza runs twice a year. The Mid-Year edition has a deadline in late June and ends at the end of that month, while the Year-End edition (which is just called "Late Treat Bonanza") is timed for Christmas/New Year's. The event usually starts up roughly three months before the deadline, so that is the length of the sign-up and creation period.

There are two basically-independent components to Late Treat Bonanza: sign-ups and creating. Sign-ups are for people to indicate to potential creators that they are still interested in receiving late treats for old requests. Creating involves making and posting late gifts for others. You can (and are encouraged to) sign up without intending to create anything and vice versa.

Note that Late Treat Bonanza is a creator-focused event, not a recipient-focused event. What this means is that:

1. The main purpose of sign-ups is not to get a gift but to reassure creators that something that they're working on is still wanted. For creators, it is always okay to add a gift to the collection even if that person has not signed up or is inactive. Treats posted to the collection have to be gifts for someone, but it is okay if they are for someone inactive, get no response, or are later rejected -- those works are still very much welcome in the collection.

2. On the recipient side, if you receive a gift through Late Treat Bonanza that you have no intention of looking at/reading for whatever reason, you may freely reject the gift -- no hard feelings! Also, note that signing up is no guarantee of a gift. That said, it may prove helpful to potential creators, and you might get some eyes on your older requests too, so I encourage you to sign up and to periodically refresh your sign-up!

Sign-ups

How do sign-ups work?

You can sign up for this event during the sign-up periods to give potential creators a recent indication that you are still interested in your requests, and which requests you're interested in.

Signing up is done by commenting on a sign-up post on Dreamwidth (check the tag to find the latest post and check if sign-ups are still open). Signing up is NOT done via the AO3 collection -- that collection is for posting works only. Sign-ups are designed to be super low-effort to make signing up as quick and painless as possible.

Can I get a gift if I don't sign up?

Yep, it's possible. However, I recommend signing up to increase your chances (maybe) of getting a gift.

Can I sign up even if I'm not planning on participating otherwise / don't intend to make any treats?

Yes, you're encouraged to! Sign ups are for anyone who still wants presents, not people who are committed to making presents.

When do sign-ups close?

Sign-ups are open each round until the collection reveals, which is the last week of June/December.

If I signed up in previous rounds, do I need to sign up again?

It can help to refresh your sign-up periodically just so that potential treaters have an idea of how recently your registered your interest in late treats. It is also helpful to sign up again or edit an old sign-up if your tastes/interests have changed. I have tried to make it pretty easy and painless to reuse old sign-ups while just marking the details as up to date with the round of Late Treat Bonanza currently running, so hopefully it's not onerous to indicate your interests are still up to date.

Can I sign up to this event if I don't have a Dreamwidth account?

Yes, you can post a sign up in a guest/logged-out comment. Please just don't use guest comments to impersonate someone else (I doubt anyone would do this, but just to be clear!).

Can I sign up to this event if I don't use AO3?

Yes. Not all of the sign-up fields may apply and it may be harder to gift works to you if you don't use AO3. However, if you've participated in gifting events off of AO3 (exchanges, prompt memes, etc.), you are welcome to mention them in your sign-up and receive gifts for them wherever you wish. However, note that I heavily rely on karanguni's AO3 Automagic App to compile fandom lists for spreadsheets and so on, so if your history of participating in gifting events is largely not on AO3, your past fandoms won't be captured there and you may want to supplement this on your own.

Creating

How do I post works for this event?

Works for this event should be late gifts for people. Gifts should be added to the current round's AO3 collection and will be hidden until the work reveals date (24 June for Mid-Year Bonanza or 25 December for Late Treat Bonanza).

I recommend posting both to the Late Treat Bonanza AO3 collection AND the collection of the original event the treat was intended for, so that people can see which event/request initially inspired the treat.

Do I need to be signed up in order to post treats?

No, you can just post them to the collection once the collection is up. You don't have to be signed up (although you're encouraged to, if you've partipated in gift-giving events in the past).

What kinds of events can I make late treats for, for the purpose of this event?

Basically, any event where gifting works on AO3 is acceptable/part of the event. This includes: Dreamwidth/AO3-based multifandom exchanges; single-fandom exchanges hosted on AO3 that accept late treats; gifting events like [community profile] fandomgiftbasket and [community profile] fandomtrees (also including inactive events like [community profile] fandomgiftbox, [community profile] fandom_stocking, and [community profile] in_a_peartree); and some prompt memes.

For prompt memes, the gift has to be for a specific person and it has to be "late," meaning: it is for a meme that is closed (no longer accepting prompts); it is for a meme that you consider dead/inactive; or the meme is still active but you are filling a prompt that is so old that you are beginning to wonder if it's still wanted.

The rules are pretty open here -- if you think your work fits the theme of "late gifts for people," it is welcome.

Can I create gifts for this event if I don't use AO3?

Kind of. Non-AO3 events are eligible for this event, and you can also gift works to people outside of AO3, if you wish. However, the main issue with participating as a creator if you don't want to use AO3 is that I use the AO3 collection to collect works and hide them until the work reveals date, and to keep them anonymous until the creator reveals date one week later. I don't have the resources to support this functionality anywhere other than AO3. So you are welcome to post gifts for people outside of the AO3 collection, but in that case, the timing of the gifting and the management of anonymity is up to you to handle.

How late does the treat have to be to count as "late"?

If the event is still ongoing at the time the Late Treat Bonanza reveals, I am going to say that isn't a late treat but could have just been posted as a regular treat/fill. Other than that, though, anything goes. (But obviously the later the better. ;))

When is the event AO3 collection open for posting?

From when I create it until creator reveals (1 July for Mid-Year Bonanaza and 1 January for Late Treat Bonanza). The event AO3 collection will permanently close for submissions then, and you'll need to wait until the next round, or post outside of these events!

Is there a quick way of searching sign-ups to see who is requesting a specific fandom/character/pairing?

I have created a spreadsheet that is only searchable for fandoms here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1pGYTEjicusIVz7pN7PsZu0XwS2z5N32LTWR7u0_6BN0/edit?usp=sharing

The spreadsheet contains instructions for using it. Unfortunately, the spreadsheet doesn't allow filtering for characters, relationships, requested media, etc. If there's an issue with any of the information in the spreadsheet, please let me know at the spreadsheet correction post.

Are there any restrictions on what kind of gifts I can make for someone?

Yes, the general principle is that you should have reason to believe that your gift is something appropriate to give to your recipient. So some things to be aware of would be:

- The medium of your gift (art, fic, podfic, unconventional media, etc.) should match whatever media the recipient has requested (or opted into for treats). Works of all media (as long as it has been requested) are welcome in the collection.

- Your work should respect your recipient's Do Not Wants (DNWs) (meaning it should not contain content that has been DNW'd by the recipient). Unless otherwise specified, the DNWs of the recip's request (in their original sign-up) are what you should work off of. People who sign up can choose to specify how they want their DNWs handled if not that (in case e.g. their DNWs have changed significantly over time).

- Treats should conform to the requirements of the exchange they are meant for.
