Late Treat Bonanza 2023: Schedule and Rules
Hi! Welcome to Late Treat Bonanza. Late Treat Bonanza is an event designed to encourage people to finish up late fanwork gifts they intend to give to other people. We provide a collection that reveals on Christmas (December 25) and which has a 1-week anonymous period. While late treats are always allowed, the intention of this event is to give people structure, deadline, occasion, and/or company to make someone a present, regardless of how long ago the gift was started or intended to be made. This event is inspired by
happybelatedtreatmas, although with some notable differences, particularly in the way sign-ups work.

Schedule:
Sign-ups end/works due: 24 December 23:59 PST (UTC-8)
Creator reveals/collection closed: 31 December 23:59 PST (UTC-8)
Late Treat Bonanza is a creator-focused event, not a recipient-focused event. What this means is that:
1. People can (and are highly encouraged to) sign up to indicate that they are interested in late treats and to get more eyes on their old requests. However, the main purpose of sign-ups is to reassure creators that something that they're working on is still wanted. Signing up is no guarantee for a treat and also, gifts for users who have not signed up can still be added to the collection!
2. Works added to the collection are expected to be valid gifts for someone -- they have a specific recipient and respect request details like DNWs, are of the requested/opted-into media type for treats, etc. However, it is okay to add gifts to the collection that are for people who you are not sure are still interested in the gift (have gone inactive, have not signed up, etc.). If you receive a gift through Late Treat Bonanza that you have no intention of looking at/reading for whatever reason, you may freely reject the gift -- no hard feelings! Gifts that are rejected or have no recipient response are still very much welcome in the collection.
How do sign-ups work?
You can sign up to this event to give potential creators a recent indication that you are still interested in your requests, and which requests you're interested in.
Signing up is done by commenting on the sign-up post on Dreamwidth. (The collection is for posting works only.) Sign-ups are designed to be super low-effort to make signing up as quick and painless as possible.
Can I get a gift if I don't sign up?
It's possible. However, I recommend signing up to increase your chances (maybe) of getting a gift.
Can I sign up even if I'm not planning on participating otherwise / don't intend to make any treats?
Yes, you're encouraged to! Sign ups are for anyone who still wants presents, not people who are committed to making presents.
When do sign-ups close?
Sign-ups will remain open until the collection reveals on 24 December 23:59 PST (UTC-8).
How do I post works for this event?
The purpose of this event is to finish up late gifts for people. Late gifts should be added to the current year's Late Treat Bonanza AO3 collection and will be hidden until 25 December 0:00 PST (UTC-8).
I recommend posting both to the Late Treat Bonanza AO3 collection AND the collection of the original event the treat was intended for, so that people can see which event/request initially inspired the treat.
What kinds of events can I make late treats for, for the purpose of this event?
Basically, any event where gifting works on AO3 is acceptable/part of the event. This includes: Dreamwidth/AO3-based multifandom exchanges; single-fandom exchanges hosted on AO3 that accept late treats; gifting events like
fandomgiftbasket and
fandomtrees (also including inactive events like
fandomgiftbox,
fandom_stocking, and
in_a_peartree); and some prompt memes.
For prompt memes, the gift has to be for a specific person and it has to be "late," meaning: it is for a meme that is closed (no longer accepting prompts); it is for a meme that you consider dead/inactive; or the meme is still active but you are filling a prompt that is so old that you are beginning to wonder if it's still wanted.
The rules are pretty open here -- if you think your work fits the theme of "late gifts for people," it is welcome.
How late does the treat have to be to count as "late"?
If the event is still ongoing at the time the Late Treat Bonanza reveals, I am going to say that isn't a late treat but could have just been posted as a regular treat/fill. Other than that, though, anything goes. (But obviously the later the better. ;))
When is the Late Treat Bonanza collection open for posting?
From when I create it until creator reveals (on 1 January). The collection will close for submissions then.
Is there a quick way of searching sign-ups to see who is requesting a specific fandom/character/pairing?
Not here, but you may want to try the Search Everything function of
karanguni's amazing AO3 Automagic App.
Are there any restrictions on what kind of gifts I can make for someone?
Yes, the general principle is that you should have reason to believe that your gift is something appropriate to give to your recipient. So some things to be aware of would be:
- The medium of your gift (art, fic, podfic, unconventional media, etc.) should match whatever media the recipient has requested (or opted into for treats). Works of all media (as long as it has been requested) are welcome in the collection.
- Your work should respect your recipient's Do Not Wants (DNWs) (meaning it should not contain content that has been DNW'd by the recipient). Unless otherwise specified, the DNWs of the recip's request (in their original sign-up) are what you should work off of. People who sign up can choose to specify how they want their DNWs handled if not that (in case e.g. their DNWs have changed significantly over time).
- Treats should conform to the requirements of the exchange they are meant for.
If you have a question not answered above, let me know here!
